WHO WE ARE

Frontline Catalysts is a mission-driven organization empowering frontline youth to lead the movement for transformative climate justice. We equip middle through high school-age students with knowledge, skills, and inspiration to become environmental advocates and leaders. Our holistic Leadership Development Program, grounded in Ethnic Studies, empowers low-income youth in Title 1 schools (grades 6-12).

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking two compassionate, energetic, experienced After-School Instructors to join our dynamic team. Under the supervision of the Climate Justice Education Director, the instructors will implement engaging environmental and climate justice activities for middle and high school-age youth in our after-school program. This is a unique opportunity for the right person committed to the environment and dedicated to cultivating tomorrow’s young climate justice leaders.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

This position plays a key role in creating robust, fun, and engaging climate and environmental lesson plans and activities that build leadership and organizing skills that align with the Frontline Catalysts’ mission. This position runs from August to May, Monday through Friday, from 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm, for the school year.

  • Classroom and Student Support
  • Implement climate justice leadership instruction and outdoor education activities.
  • Ensure all students’ required documentation (registration, field trip, and other forms) is current and complete.
  • Lead and supervise youth in various activities, both in-classroom, and community.
  • Oversee and coordinate snack time, homework, and tutoring each day.
  • Foster a mindful and supportive environment that promotes growth and curiosity among the students.
  • Maintain effective classroom management to ensure program success. 
  • Assist with guardian communication when required.
  • Record daily attendance and communicate absences to guardians and FC staff. 
  • Supervise pick-up of participants and ensure parents are adhering to pick-up policies.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Act as a positive and appropriate role model for youth and colleagues.
  • Communicate with the After-School administrative team regarding supply needs.
  • Ensure program materials and space are organized and properly maintained. 
  • Demonstrate commitment to the mission of Frontline Catalysts.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Ideal Qualifications 

  • At least 1-year experience and success working with youth in an inquiry-based educational environment 
  • Certified Teacher with some experience managing students, preferred
  • Track record as a creative leader with a ‘can-do’ attitude
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality 
  • Bilingual in Spanish, preferred

Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent organizational skills and effective time management
  • Willingness to follow direction from the Climate Justice Education Director as well as self-direct/manage tasks independently
  • Desire and ability to work both in the classroom and outdoors with youth
  • Positive and respectful communication approach

THE POSITION

The After-School Instructor position is Oakland-based, part-time (25 hours), temporary, and non-exempt. The Climate Justice Education Director supervises this position. The hourly rate for this position is $30 per hour, which includes pro-rated pay for FC-recognized national holidays and a monthly technology-use stipend. All Frontline Catalysts staff must be fingerprinted, TB tested and vaccinated against Covid-19, with limited exceptions for medical or religious reasons.
